Educational Outreach

Center for Educational Outreach

The Center for Educational Outreach provides projects aimed at diverse student audiences, pre-school through graduate school as well as teacher development.

DeBakey High School for Health Professions

DeBakey HSHP offers students interested in science and health careers an alternative to the traditional high school experience. DeBakey HSHP is a small high school with an ethnically diverse population. It is located in the renowned Texas Medical Center and in the United States fifth largest school district. DeBakey HSHP offers its students a rigorous curriculum. Its faculty is dedicated to offering students an excellent introductory study of medicine combined with a solid college preparatory program which requires courses in upper level science and mathematics.

Diversity Programs

Baylor College of Medicine is recognized nationally for its diversity programs and opportunities for underrepresented minorities to train as biomedical researchers.

Houston Trauma LINK

Houston Trauma LINK is a local coalition formed in 2000 to reduce the morbidity and mortality of childhood injuries in Houston and Harris County, Texas, through sharing information, data and expertise. Baylor College of Medicine is the coordinating institution. Current coalition funding is through a grant from Texas Department of Transportation and in-kind contributions from Baylor College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, Section of Emergency Medicine.

Saturday Morning Science Community Outreach Program

The Saturday Morning Science Community Outreach Program includes 10-15 kids, chosen by their teachers because they have hidden potential. Students attend a two-hour session on the BCM campus every Saturday morning for 11 weeks in the spring semester.

Summer Programs

Programs available during the summer include:

SMART Program

The SMART program is designed for undergraduate students who are interested in exploring a career in scientific research. Applications are due by Feb. 1 of each year.

The Summer Science for Seniors (S3) Program for High School Seniors

The Baylor College of Medicine Graduate School sponsors this summer research program for local rising high school seniors. Students from any school in the Houston area are eligible for the Summer Science for Seniors program. Applicants must be high school juniors and at least 16 years old by June 1 of the year in which they participate. Application deadline is March 15 of their junior year.

A limited number of positions are available for teachers. Participants conduct research in laboratories throughout the College.

Summer Surgery Program

The Michael E. DeBakey Summer Surgery Program encourages the development and interest of well-qualified young students who are considering a medically oriented career. The program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to work with faculty, surgical residents, medical students, and nurses in our various teaching hospitals.
