National and International Students
Dear International Medical Graduate,
We are asked many questions by IMGs regarding applications to our Program, so I thought that I would address some of the more common questions here. If the answer to one of your questions is not here, please feel free to ask additional questions.
- Does our Program accept
IMGs?
Yes. - How many of your Residents
that started this July 1 are IMGs?
We typically have 1-2 IMGs. - Are there any special
requirements for applicants?
No. For all applicants, we look at grades from Medical School and College (they may be from one program if your school had combined college and medical schools), letters of recommendation, your Dean's letter, your personal statement, your CV, and your USMLE Step 1, 2, and 3 scores. As with all applicants, we also like to see a significant US medical experience to know how you do in that environment. - What are your minimum
score requirements for Step I, Step II, and Step III?
There is no minimum score on the Step exams; however, because we interview just 40 persons, the usual minimum score on the Step exams for candidates that we interview is about 210 (3 digit). - Can I apply without my
ECFMG certificate?
I believe that we cannot match with anyone who does not have an ECFMG certificate; however, I do not know the exact requirements. Please refer to the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®) web site (http://www.aamc.org/audienceeras.htm) or the NRMP's Main Residency Match (http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/index.html). - How do I apply to the
Baylor Neurology Residency Program?
We only accept applications through ERAS. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that they meet all program prerequisites and institutional policies regarding eligibility for appointment to a residency position prior to ranking a program through the NRMP. In particular, non-U.S. citizens should inquire about visas accepted by the institution. - What is the deadline
for applications?
We do not have a formal deadline. However, we only have about 40 interview slots. Since we usually fill those slots by mid September, it is best to submit your application as early as possible. - What kind of visas do
you sponsor?
We try to be helpful in obtaining or renewing the visas of our IMGs. The type of Visa that one gets depends on the INS, of course, and so we cannot guarantee anything other than our willingness to be as helpful as possible. - Do you offer a combined
internship and residency?
No. However, we have a close relationship with Internal Medicine Preliminary year program here at Baylor College of Medicine. We work to help get our Matched applicants into this outstanding program, and we are usually successful. Application for this program is separate through ERAS (http://www.aamc.org/audienceeras.htm). There is a separate interview for the Internal Medicine Program. - Do you have a brochure?
No. We used to print a brochure, but it was often out of date by the time that we published it. Thus, at this time, we are exclusively placing information online. Please let us know if we failed to answer any questions in our online material, and we will address them. - Should letters of recommendation
be from a core rotation at my medical school? Do you
require that this letter be from the chief of the
department or can I request letters from any faculty
member with whom I worked?
Letters of Recommendation are probably most useful if they are from neurologists and from the Chair of Neurology at your school or at another school at which you rotated. However, they can be from any physician with whom you worked. - Do you require that applicants
have graduated from Medical School after a certain
date?
No. However, we prefer recent graduates.
Sincerely,
Paul E. Schulz, M.D.
